Eyebright, elderflower, dong quai and liquorice. Eyebright contains tannins, which help dry up secretions and can relieve inflammation of the mucous mebranes, caffeic acid which is antiseptic, and aucubin which is anti-inflammatory. Elderflower has been used for many years to help with inflamation of mucous membranes, due to colds or allergies. Dong Quai has been shown to have significant effects in conditions in which individuals are sensitive to a variety of substances (pollens, dust, food etc). It has the ability to inhibit the production of allergic antibodies (IgE) in a selective manner. IgE levels are typically 3-10 times greater than the normal upper limit in patients with allergic conditions. Liquorice has the ability to increase the half-life of cortisol, resulting in increased anti-inflammatory action of this hormone. In addition, liquorice has many similar actions to cortisone in reducing inflammation via its inhibition of several key enzymes involved in the promotion of inflammation.
Contraindications: Not for use during pregnancy.
